At this unique temple, rats aren't pests - they are holy guests! Over 25,000 black rats live here, protected and fed by locals who believe the rats are reincarnations of a goddess's family.

In the town of Deshnoke, Rajasthan, stands the Karni Mata Temple. While most people run away from rats, thousands of pilgrims travel here every year to walk barefoot among them.
The legend follows a 14th-century female Hindu sage named Karni Mata. When her stepson died, she asked Yamat (the god of death) to bring him back. When he refused, she declared that all her male family members would no longer go to the god of death; instead, they would be temporarily reincarnated as rats before being reborn again as humans.
Visitors must remove their shoes before entering. If a rat runs over your feet, it is considered a blessing! Despite the thousands of rats, there has never been an outbreak of plague or disease reported at the temple in its long history.
The Karni Mata Temple is a powerful symbol of how faith can change our perspective on nature. It teaches that every living creature, no matter how small or misunderstood, can be seen as sacred.
