Long ago, water was often dirty and full of germs. People gave children "small beer" because the cooking process made it safer to drink than the water from the well!

Today, we tell children to drink water for their health. But hundreds of years ago in Europe, drinking a glass of water from a river or a well could actually make you very sick.
In the Middle Ages, people didn't have filters or chemicals to clean their water. Waste often ended up in the same places people got their drinking water, leading to dangerous diseases like cholera.
To solve this, people drank "Small Beer." This wasn't the strong beer adults drink today. It was a very weak version, containing just enough alcohol to kill some bacteria, but not enough to get someone drunk.
Giving a child beer wasn't about partying; it was about survival. It was a filtered, boiled, and nutritious alternative in a world where "pure water" was a luxury no one had!
